Many men claim to pee immediately after BBFS in order to flush out bacteria before they can attach to the urethra. Berberine might offer additional protection.

Quoting from naturallysavvy website:

"The Oregon grape contains berberine, a substance that has the ability to stop bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary and intestinal tracts. That makes Oregon grape supplements and tea a natural way to help eliminate urinary tract infections".

Quoting from Dr. Mercola website:

"Berberine is a yellow-colored alkaloid compound found in several different plants, including European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, phellodendron, and tree turmeric".

"Berberine has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing properties. It's effective against a wide range of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. It can be used topically on cuts and other wounds, and it's perhaps most commonly used to treat gastrointestinal issues, including traveller's diarrhea and that from food poisoning".

Product review: Nutribiotic DefensePlus

Ingredients per tablet:

Vitamin C (as Meta-C calcium ascorbate) 125 mg - Quoting from ncbi website: "Several cells of the immune system can indeed accumulate vitamin C and need the vitamin to perform their task, especially phagocytes and t-cells. Thus a vitamin C deficiency results in a reduced resistance against certain pathogens whilst a higher supply enhances several immune system parameters".

Zinc (gluconate) 5 mg - Quoting from ncbi website: "Zinc affects multiple aspects of the immune system. Zinc is crucial for normal development and function of cells mediating innate immunity, neutrophils, and NK cells. Macrophages also are affected by zinc deficiency. Phagocytosis, intracellular killing, and cytokine production all are affected by zinc deficiency".

Grapefruit Seed Extract 250 mg - Quoting from thecandidadiet website: "The American Research Institute reports that GSE can be used effectively to kill over 800 bacterial and viral strains, and 100 strains of fungi".

Astragalus Root 100 mg - Studies have shown that astragalus has natural antiviral properties and stimulates the immune system. Astragalus boosts the activity, production and functioning of various immune cells, such as T-cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages.

Reishi Mushroom Extract (4:1) 100 mg - Quoting from wellandgood website: "Historically, reishi mushrooms have been used as an immune system enhancer—they’re even used in Asian cultures as an immunostimulant for patients with HIV and cancer. The beta glucans (complex sugars) in the mushroom are believed to stimulate the immune system to prevent infection".

Echinacea Angustifolia Extract (4:1) 50 mg - Quoting from webmd website: "Extracts of echinacea do seem to have an effect on the immune system, your body's defense against germs. Research shows it increases the number of white blood cells, which fight infections".

Ginger Root Extract (6:1) 50 mg - Quoting from Dr. Axe website: "In addition to its antifungal properties, ginger boasts the ability to fight off bacterial infections as well". Quoting from sciencedirect website: "Enhancement of RBC (red blood cell) counts and hemoglobin levels in smokers. Non-smokers had enhanced IgM (immunoglobulin) levels. This may lead to a stronger antibody response against infections.

Maitake Mushroom Extract (4:1) 50 mg -
Shiitake Mushroom Extract (4:1) 50 mg - Quoting from ncbi website: "We found significant stimulation of defense reaction. In all cases, the most active was the Maitake-Shiitake combination. Short-term oral application of natural immunomodulating glucans from Maitake and Shiitake mushrooms strongly stimulated both the cellular and humoral branch of immune reactions".

Oregon Grape Root 50 mg - Contains berberine which prevents bacteria from adhering to the urinary and digestive tract. Also has anti-bacterial and immune enhancing properties.

Yarrow Extract (6:1) 50 mg - Quoting from sciencedirect website: "Yarrow is a medicinal herb of broad therapeutic value. The essential oil showed significant allelopathic, moderate antibacterial & antifungal activities".

Quoting from webmd website:

"Monolaurin is a chemical made from lauric acid, which is found in coconut milk and breast milk. Monolaurin is used for preventing and treating colds (the common cold), flu (influenza), swine flu, herpes, shingles, and other infections. It is also used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and to boost the immune system".

Quoting from westonprice website:

"For years, I counseled my herpes patients to eat as much coconut oil, as they could stomach. However, in the past year, I discovered a product called Lauricidin, which is a concentrate or pure form of monolaurin. I have been consistently impressed with the ability of Lauricidin to suppress herpes outbreaks, and allow people to get off their antiviral drugs. It is a safe extract, which can be taken long term".

Quoting from naturalcurelabs website:

"Herpes viruses are "enveloped", which means the virus has a lipid or fatty capsule around the DNA. Monolaurin is able to break down the fatty envelope which protects the herpes virus, killing the virus and also inhibiting the replication of the virus. Numerous laboratory tests have validated this".

Quoting from selfhacked website:

"Monolaurin is a promising antimicrobial due to its antibacterial and antiviral effects, safety and lack of toxicity. Monolaurin kills any virus that has a fat (lipid) membrane on the outside. Monolaurin also disrupts virus replication by blocking DNA replication signals. Monolaurin incorporates itself into the cell membrane of gram-positive bacteria (but not gram-negative bacteria) and destroys them by breaking down the cell membrane. This stops bacteria from replicating and spreading, making it easier for the immune system to destroy. A cell study compared monolaurin and 6 common antibiotics (including penicillin, oxacillin, and vancomycin) in the treatment of skin infections. Monolaurin showed similar effectiveness and less antibiotic resistance against a wide range of bacteria".

Quoting from anh-usa website:

"Vitamin D is a powerful natural antiviral. Research from the University of Copenhagen shows that vitamin D activates the immune system by arming T-cells to fight off infections. Without vitamin D, the immune system’s T-cells remain dormant, offering little or no protection against invading microorganisms and viruses. Japanese study found that vitamin D was more effective than a vaccine in preventing flu. The problem is that a whopping 59 percent of the population is deficient in vitamin D. For anyone plagued by herpes, it’s essential that you are getting enough vitamin D".

"selenium inhibits the ability of all “herpes-family” viruses to reproduce. zinc boosts the infection-fighting capability of immune system".

Quoting from dynamicchiropractic website:

"Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and bok choy contain an active ingredient known as the indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to inhibit replication of herpes viruses. The levels of vitamin C, selenium, zinc, vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E in a high-potency multivitamin can enhance immune function, which has been reported to suppress herpes. reishi mushroom extract has been shown to possess potent antiviral properties against HSV-1 and HSV-2".

Quoting from healthimpactnews website:

"One study found that dialysis patients who receive vitamin D were less likely to develop shingles, which is part of the herpes family of viruses; higher vitamin D levels corresponded with more antibodies to the herpes-simplex-2 virus. Vitamin D works best when other cofactors are present, such as magnesium, vitamin K2, zinc, boron, and vitamin A".

Quoting from liverdoctor website:

"Selenium is the most important mineral for the immune system and the liver to function at their optimal level; indeed without adequate selenium in your body, your immune system and liver will remain vulnerable to attack. It’s amazing to think that despite the profound importance of selenium to human health many people remain deficient in this life saving mineral".

Quoting from jamaica-gleaner website:

"A strong and healthy immune system is our main defence against any kind of disease. Many people come in contact with herpes but never contract it because of their efficient immune systems. Nutrients can have a direct stimulatory effect on the immune system. These include the antioxidants - the ACES: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, vitamin E and Selenium. Vitamin B12 is another important nutrient with anti-herpes properties".

"Butylated HydroxyToluene (BHT) is a synthetic food preservative that is widely used in breakfast cereals, baked goods, potato chips, sausage, peanut butter and other commercial foods. It is a very non-toxic substance that has many outstanding effects including the destruction of the herpes virus. BHT inactivates the herpes virus by disrupting its lipid shell, leaving it exposed and vulnerable to attack by the immune system. BHT is also effective against shingles, hepatitis, influenza and other viral diseases and is available in capsule form".

Quoting from wellbeingjournal website:

"Taken as a whole, the geographical evidence, therefore, strongly suggests that selenium is protective against HIV infection. Such a relationship is not limited to this virus. Field trials in China also have shown that hepatitis B and C viral infection rates can be reduced by selenium supplementation. Selenium supplements can improve the human immune system by causing an increase in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase and in the production of interferon gamma and T helper cells and an earlier peak in T cell proliferation".

"Simply put, humans, animals and insects that are selenium deficient are easily infected by a wide variety of viruses. Those eating selenium-adequate diets are not. This relationship between the trace element and HIV is the key to reversing the current AIDS pandemic since it is the virus’s Achilles’ heel".

Quoting from berkeleywellness website:

"Brazil nuts’ most important nutritional claim is their extraordinary selenium content. The trace mineral selenium is an antioxidant, and a single Brazil nut can provide more than twice the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of selenium. A large nut has 140 micrograms, or 254 percent of the RDA. It's much better to get your selenium from food than from supplements"

I take 2400mg of monolaurin and 3000IU of Vitamin D3+K2 daily. I have been doing so for about a year. I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but I haven't gotten sick lately. I used to get sick a lot. There was a recent viral outbreak in my close circles (family + friends) causing vomiting and diarrhea. Seemed quite contagious as almost everyone got it.. So far, knock on wood, I'm unaffected.

Anecdotal evidence, obviously.
